How Do I Safely Swaddle My Baby?Updated 2 months ago
To ensure safe swaddling with our Cocoon Swaddle Bag, follow these key guidelines:
1. Check the Neck Fit:
The neck, shoulder, and chest area of the swaddle should fit closely to prevent your baby from slipping inside or pulling the swaddle over their mouth. To check the neck opening, try to comfortably place two fingers inside. It should feel snug, but not tight. If the opening feels tight, it's time to move up to the next size.
2. Ensure a Firm Fit Across the Torso:
The swaddle should be firm across your baby’s torso but still allow for full chest expansion. Babies' ribs are soft and flexible, so it's important not to swaddle too tightly across the chest, as this can restrict their ability to breathe comfortably.
3. Keep Hips and Legs Loose:
The swaddle should be loose around the hips and legs to allow them to naturally assume the frog-leg position, which is how babies are positioned in the womb. Tight swaddling around the hips can increase the risk of developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH), so make sure the swaddle is not restrictive in this area.
4. Avoid Overheating:
Babies can struggle to regulate their body temperature, so it’s essential not to overdress them under the swaddle. Be mindful not to cover their head with hats or beanies while they sleep, and choose a swaddle with a TOG rating to help regulate their temperature. TOG-rated swaddles eliminate the need for loose blankets, which can be bulky and pose a suffocation risk.
5. Eliminate Suffocation Hazards:
Always ensure there are no other suffocation hazards in your baby’s sleep space, such as loose blankets, toys, or cot bumpers. The swaddle should be secure, and there should be no chance of fabric draping over your baby’s face.
