Is the HugMe Blanket safety tested?Updated 2 months ago

Safety is at the forefront of mind when designing an ergoPouch product.

Each of our products undergoes rigorous safety testing to meet or exceed the required standards for AU/NZ, US, UK/EU, and SIDS guidelines for baby sleep products. The HugMe Blanket was specifically designed with newborns in mind, offering a safer sleep alternative for babies. Many new parents are taught by midwives, friends, and family to tuck a blanket around their baby to keep them warm, which often leads to the use of heavy, loose blankets that can pose safety risks. The HugMe Blanket was created to provide a safer option that addresses these concerns.

The HugMe Blanket has been thoroughly and independently tested and approved by the Infant and Nursery Products Alliance of Australia (INPAA) and in partnership with The Lullaby Trust UK. It has been recognized as a safer-sleep product for newborns born at full term (37 weeks+), weighing 3kg+, and measuring 50cm+—provided they are not yet rolling.

In line with the safety standards set by INPAA, The Lullaby Trust UK, Red Nose Australia, and the American Academy of Paediatrics (AAP), the HugMe Blanket meets the following newborn safe sleep criteria:

  1. Place infants in their own sleep space: The HugMe Blanket is designed to fit bassinets, cots, cribs, and bedside sleepers, encouraging parents to place their baby in their own safe sleep space instead of co-sleeping or using seating devices like swings, car seats, or loungers.

  2. No loose blankets in the baby’s sleep space: The HugMe Blanket is a snug-fitting mattress sleeve that wraps around the mattress like a pillow slip. It can't shift or become loose, preventing blankets from riding up over the baby’s chest. This design ensures it’s not considered loose bedding, reducing the risk of suffocation.

  3. Place baby on their back in the feet-to-foot position: The HugMe Blanket encourages parents to place their baby on their back, with their feet touching the end of the cot or bassinet, to ensure safe sleep posture.

  4. Avoid overheating and keep the face uncovered: The HugMe Blanket is TOG-rated, made from breathable organic cotton, and comes with a What to Wear Dressing Guide. This helps parents dress their baby appropriately for sleep, avoiding the need for quilted or heavy polyester blankets that could trap heat or pose suffocation risks if they shift over the baby’s face.

The HugMe Blanket includes the following important safety warnings:

  1. Designed for newborns who are not yet rolling.
  2. Discontinue use once babies show signs of rolling to ensure their safety.
  3. Position the HugMe Blanket no higher than midway up the baby’s chest when their feet are at the end of the cot/crib/bassinet.
  4. Choose the right size for your sleep space and baby’s age. The design is intended to make it difficult for babies to pull the product over their face or slip underneath it when used correctly for newborns who are not yet rolling.

Since its global release in 2019 (formerly known as the 'Baby Tuck Sheet'), the HugMe Blanket has provided thousands of babies with secure, comforting, and warm sleep. Parents worldwide have shared glowing reviews, praising how the HugMe Blanket has positively impacted their families’ sleep routines.
