Safety Tips for Using White Noise

White noise can be safely introduced to a baby from birth if used correctly. The key is to ensure it plays in the background, never in the foreground, so it doesn’t completely drown out important external sounds.

Important guidelines:

  • Volume: Aim for white noise levels similar to a normal conversation, a shower, or a background dryer—roughly between 0-60 decibels. Avoid anything louder, as sounds above 60 to 90 decibels (like traffic, trucks, alarms, or jet engines) can be harmful to your baby’s sensitive ears.

  • Positioning: Keep the white noise device outside the cot, ideally at least 2 meters away from your baby. Never place the device near their head.

  • Safe sleep: Always follow safe sleep practices, ensuring your baby is sleeping in a safe and comfortable environment.

By using white noise responsibly and at the right volume, you can create a calming sleep environment without compromising your baby’s safety.
