When Should I Transition My Baby from Swaddle (Closed Poppers) to Sleeping Bag (Open Poppers) in the Cocoon?

It’s time to start transitioning your baby from a swaddle (with closed poppers) to a sleeping bag (with open poppers) when they begin showing signs of rolling over from their back onto their front. This milestone typically occurs around 8 weeks and is important because a rolling baby needs to be able to use their arms to lift their head and breathe clearly if they roll onto their front.

Signs It’s Time to Transition:

  • Attempting to roll: Your baby may start trying to roll their body when unswaddled.
  • Tummy time progress: They may push up on their hands during tummy time, lifting one hand off the ground.
  • Fussiness with swaddling: If your baby becomes fussy or fights when being swaddled, or if they show signs of disrupted sleep.
  • Disappearance of the startle reflex: If your baby no longer has the startle reflex, it may be a sign they’re ready for arms-out sleep.
  • Hands up or free: Your baby might try to get their hands free or up near their face when swaddled, indicating they want more freedom.

How to Transition:

We recommend starting with one arm out of the swaddle. This gradual approach helps your baby adjust to the new sleeping position. You may experience a few disturbed nights as they get used to this change, which is perfectly normal. Try leaving one arm out for a few days or a week, then switch to the other arm once your baby seems comfortable.

If your baby is having trouble adjusting, don’t revert to swaddling, as it could be unsafe if they are already trying to roll. Instead, try using our Butterfly Cardi to help with the transition. It provides some extra security while still allowing your baby’s arms to move freely, making it easier for them to adapt.

Transitions can take time, but with patience and gradual steps, your baby will be able to sleep comfortably and safely without the swaddle.
