How do I dress my baby in temperatures of 26°C (79°F) or above?Updated 2 months ago

For room temperatures of 26°C (79°F) or above, it is important to dress your baby in a way that keeps them comfortable, safe, and reduces the risk of overheating.

Room temperature fluctuations, especially during seasonal changes, are a common challenge.

If you have access to air conditioning, set it to a comfortable temperature to keep the room cool. Alternatively, a fan can help improve airflow by circulating the air. If these options are not available, here are some other ways to help keep your room cool:

  • Avoid direct heat sources: If possible, move your child's bed away from windows or areas where heat can radiate directly into the room.
  • Close Blinds or Curtains: Sunlight can significantly heat up a room, so keep blinds or curtains closed during the hottest parts of the day, especially if the room faces the sun.
  • Adjust for temperature changes: If the temperature drops slightly overnight, try dressing your baby according to the current room temperature, not the lower overnight temperature. This helps prevent overheating as they settle into bed.

Our products are designed for temperatures up to 26°C. For temperatures above this, we recommend dressing your baby in minimal clothing to ensure they stay cool. If temperatures exceed 26°C, a nappy (or nappy and butterfly cardi for a newborn) is a good option to avoid the risks associated with overheating.

Keep our temperature guide in your room for easy reference. If you notice the room cooling overnight, consider making small adjustments:

  • Nappy change or dream feed: Use these moments to adjust your baby’s clothing. Change the TOG on the sleeping bag, or add a tuck sheet as a light layer to help comfort, and minimise waking from startle reflex.

Organic cotton is a great choice for keeping your baby comfortable in warm temperatures. It’s more breathable than synthetic fabrics and helps maintain a balanced body temperature. This fabric also ensures your baby’s skin stays cool, dry, and free from irritation, making it a safer and more comfortable option for warm weather.

Always check for signs of overheating. Feel your baby’s neck or back to ensure they’re not too hot. If they feel sweaty or warm, remove a layer of clothing. Remember that each baby is unique, so it’s important to adjust based on how they feel and act. By staying mindful of their comfort and adjusting their clothing as needed, you can help them sleep both safely and comfortably.
